This course is a literary study of extra-biblical Jewish texts and traditions connected to Enoch (Chanokh). The Book of Enoch is a fascinating ancient tale of a seer’s heavenly journey, fallen angels, giants, visions of the divine realm, and God’s very throne. As we examine the visions of angelic hierarchies and eschatological expectations, we will encounter ancient perspectives on human destiny, divine judgment, and cosmic order. In the process, many mystical ideas, beliefs, and spiritual themes will rise to the surface and help us see the marks Enoch lore left on early Judaism and nascent Christianity. To gain a deeper insight, the lectures will correlate the passages we read with Biblical material and other related texts from antiquity.
